The take

The lawn bird — head cocked, hopping, listening for worms from Dilworth to Derita.

How to ID it

  • Large round-bodied songbird with long legs and fairly long tail; the largest North American thrush
  • Gray-brown above with warm orange underparts and a dark head
  • Bounds across lawns standing erect, and flicks its tail downward when landing; forms large flocks in winter
