Guided Tours

Charlotte with a story at every stop — on foot, on a bike, or out the windshield. Each tour is a route plus a placard at each place: read it here, or follow it on the map. Finish one and the Mint Coins are yours.

  • How Charlotte Eats

Meat-and-three to food hall: chili and étouffée in the streetcar suburbs, injera on Central Avenue, brisket out west, soul food in the banking district — seven stops ending where the looms used to run. This one's a drive, not a walk.

  • The Industrial Canvas

The west-north corridor where Charlotte's newest art hangs on its oldest industrial leftovers — a photography nonprofit, an outdoor graffiti gallery, and a Ford plant turned missile depot turned 76-acre canvas.

  • Whitewater Half-Day

A half-day built around the U.S. National Whitewater Center — diner breakfast on Westinghouse before, the rapids and fifty miles of trail in the middle, and the Steele Creek landing pattern of outlets, driving bays, and a dog bar after. This one's a drive.

  • Reed Gold & Concord Loop

The origin-story day trip: the creek where a 12-year-old's 17-pound rock started America's first documented gold rush, then back through Concord past NASCAR's home track and the state's biggest mall. Everything Charlotte became starts at stop one. A drive, east and back.

North up the Catawba chain: a nature preserve on Mountain Island Lake to start honest, Birkdale's engineered main street, Davidson's real one, and dinner at the restaurant that put the whole day on Charlotte's food map. A drive up I-77 and back.

  • Brooklyn: 238 Acres

Brooklyn filled 238 acres of Second Ward — schools, churches, newspapers, and by most accounts over a thousand families — until Charlotte demolished it under urban renewal between 1960 and the late 1970s. Five stops through what survived and what replaced it. This walk is witness, not sightseeing.

  • Gold and the Mint

Charlotte was a money town a hundred and fifty years before the banks: a walk from the Square down the actual gold vein under uptown's edge — a razed federal mint, two collapsed mine shafts, and the markers that stand in for all of it — ending at the museum the mint building became after it got up and moved three miles east. The last leg is a drive.

  • The Land Under the City

Three stops, because three stops is what honesty supports: almost nothing built by the region's Native nations survives in Charlotte, so this tour is the geography — the city's main street read as the trading path it follows, the state marker that names the route, and the museum holding the region's deep history. For the Catawba Nation's own telling of its own story, go to catawba.com; this guide points there rather than paraphrasing. The last leg is a drive.

  • Strategically Convenient

Charlotte has never had a base or a shipyard, and three wars came through anyway — a Revolutionary stand at the Square, the Confederacy's only inland navy yard, a gold mint turned military hospital, the church where the Army announced a city-sized camp, and the depot the Army moved into and left behind. The camp itself is gone; this walk routes what stands.
