Museums & Uptown Art
A museum row on South Tryon, a science museum on North Tryon, and the history that explains why it's all called Uptown.
Charlotte's museum cluster sits mostly on Tryon Street, a few blocks either side of the Square — the Bechtler's modernist collection under its mirrored Firebird, the Gantt Center's African-American art and history, the Mint Museum's craft and design galleries, and Discovery Place's hands-on science a few blocks north. Myers Park adds the original Mint building, moved brick by brick from its 1837 site, and a formal garden built from a 1927 backyard.

Why "Uptown"?
Why does Charlotte call it Uptown instead of Downtown?
Two reasons, one geographic and one on purpose: the center city sits on a literal rise (the crossing at Trade & Tryon is one of the highest points around), and in 1974 city boosters formally campaigned to rebrand 'Downtown' as 'Uptown' to shake the empty-after-five reputation. It stuck.
Locals will correct you, gently. The four wards - First through Fourth - quarter the center city around Trade & Tryon, and the guide's district pages follow that map.

The Meck Dec
The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence - a declaration Charlotte says its leaders signed on May 20, 1775, more than a year before Philadelphia. The catch: no original copy survives, historians have argued about it for two centuries, and the date is on the North Carolina flag anyway.
Charlotte celebrates Meck Dec Day every May 20. Whatever a historian concludes, the argument itself is the most Charlotte thing there is - the history threads cover both sides.
