   D.A. Tompkins formed the D.A. Tompkins Company in partnership with R.M. Miller Sr., an engineering and manufacturing firm that would go on to design, build, and equip more than 100 cotton mills across the South, including Charlotte's Alpha, Ada, and Victor mills.

2. 1889

   The Alpha, Ada, and Victor mills were all erected in 1888-89 by the D.A. Tompkins Company and are considered among Charlotte's first cotton mills built directly within the city, following the earlier mill-town precedents set elsewhere in the North Carolina Piedmont.

3. 1910

   By 1910, the D.A. Tompkins Company had helped construct at least 250 cotton oil mills, 150 electric plants, and 100 cotton mills across the South, a scale of industrial promotion that made Tompkins one of the era's most prolific 'Cotton Mill Campaign' engineers.
