    Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote the Brown v. Board opinion, which combined cases from Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington D.C. and invalidated the 'separate but equal' doctrine established in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) as it applied to public education nationwide.

    Julius Chambers opened a solo law practice in Charlotte in June 1964; with partners James E. Ferguson II and Adam Stein it grew into what is described as the first racially integrated law firm in North Carolina history, and the firm litigated the Swann case among other landmark civil rights suits.
