Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, the second-oldest congregation in Mecklenburg County, was organized around 1760 by Scots-Irish settlers; its first permanent pastor, Robert Henry, arrived in 1766, and Rev. James McRee led the congregation from 1778 to 1797. The Mecklenburg Presbytery itself was organized at Steele Creek in 1780.
