    Charles Johnston and William Holt chartered the North Carolina Realty Company, with the help of developer Edward Dilworth Latta, who arranged for a trolley line to connect the new North Charlotte mill village to downtown Charlotte.

    North Charlotte's mill village was founded in 1903 when textile magnates William Holt (of Alamance County) and Jesse Spencer and Charles W. Johnston (of Charlotte) joined to build the Highland Park Manufacturing Company and the surrounding mill village.
