    On May 20, 1912 (the 137th anniversary of the alleged signing), the North Carolina Society of the Colonial Dames of America dedicated a marble and bronze commemorative tablet in the rotunda of the North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh inscribed 'In Commemoration of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence May 20, 1775 and the Twenty Seven Signers,' with remarks by Chief Justice Walter Clark and acceptance by Governor William W. Kitchen.
