The take

Your breakfast bankrolls second chances — the staff are students working toward jobs on the far side of recovery — and the cooking needs no asterisk: the chef was a 2025 James Beard semifinalist. Weekdays only, 7am to 2pm.

What to order: Order the New Orleans fried chicken sandwich with cheddar grits, and wash it down with their Salted Honey Cortado.

Questions people ask

Who runs it, and who works there?

It is a social enterprise of Charlotte Rescue Mission, run as a life-skills training programme — the people working and training in the cafe are graduates of the Mission's recovery programme.

Can I book a table, or is it counter service?

Both — it takes table reservations and also does online ordering for pickup.
