The take

NC highway historical marker L-1 (cast 1936, Shamrock Drive) reads: 'Stone dwelling, built ca. 1774, by Revolutionary leader, who helped draft state constitution, 1776. Stands 400 yards S.E.' The house sits on the grounds of the Charlotte Museum of History at 3500 Shamrock Drive, which as of August 2026 is open Tuesday-Saturday 11 am-5 pm (summer Sundays 1-5 pm) with docent-led Rock House tours at 2 pm Tuesday-Friday and 12 pm and 2 pm Saturdays, reserved in person; adult admission $15 plus tax.

How much is admission?

$15 adults, $12 seniors 62+, children 4–17 and students, $10 veterans. Under-4s and members free.

Is it a guided tour or self-guided?

Both — admission includes a self-guided audio tour of the homesite, and staff lead tours of the 1774 Rock House daily at 2pm, with an extra noon tour on Saturdays.

Guided tours are first come, first served and can only be reserved in person, on the day.

A reconstructed log kitchen, a two-storey springhouse, the relocated Caldwell Barn, a kitchen garden kept by the Charlotte Herb Guild, and a creek running through the grounds.
