You're on the ground that briefly doubled Charlotte: Camp Greene, the WWI training camp that ran between Wilkinson Boulevard and Tuckaseegee Road, held more than 60,000 soldiers, and vanished after 1918 — the Dowd House, the 1870s farmhouse the Army used as headquarters, is the only structure left, and Camp Greene Park keeps the name in the neighborhood it became. No rail reaches this side: the Gold Line stops across the way in Wesley Heights, so you arrive by car or bus. Start where the west side meets the creek — Stewart Creek Greenway runs 2.4 miles toward Uptown and ends at the old Savona Mill, where Blue Blaze Brewing pours in the mill itself. Up on Tuckaseegee, Enderly Coffeeroasts for its own neighborhood; for the meal, the guide's note on LuLu's Expresspoints directly across the street — Maryland-style crab cakes from the original Lulu's takeout window.
