The take
Independence Square is the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets, the crossing around which Charlotte grew; per Wikipedia, both streets follow what were major Native American trading paths. Each corner carries a 25-foot, 5,000-pound bronze on a granite pedestal - Commerce, Industry, Transportation, and The Future - all by sculptor Raymond Kaskey, donated by the Queen's Table in the mid-1990s. In 1974 the City Council proclaimed the surrounding center city 'Uptown Charlotte.'
