On the trail
The park's own site lists a boat ramp, seasonal boat rentals (canoes, pedal boats, single and tandem kayaks, paddleboards), lake beach access, swimming, paddling and fishing, plus camping — camper cabins, tent, RV/trailer with hookups and group sites — 38 miles of hiking and 30.5 miles of biking.

Duke Energy, which operates the dam, is targeting 98.5 today and reads 97.48 — 1.02 below target.

The Catawba–Wateree basin is in Stage 2of Duke's Low Inflow Protocol, its drought footing — which is why levels across the chain are below target and some access has closed.

The take

The one gate on this water where you can swim, launch, rent a boat and sleep, all without driving between them — which is why it is worth the extra half hour past the county parks. Thirty-eight miles of hiking and thirty of biking mean it holds a full day rather than an afternoon; the rentals are seasonal, so call the timing before you count on a kayak.
