    On January 15, 1767, Abraham Alexander, Thomas Polk, and John Frohock purchased 360 acres from George Augustus Selwyn for ninety pounds as the site for the town of Charlotte; commissioners then laid out one hundred acres in half-acre lots on a grid of streets, with the east-west trading path becoming Trade Street and the Great Wagon Road becoming Tryon Street (named for royal governor William Tryon).

    Christopher Bechtler Sr., his son Augustus, and a nephew also named Christopher — German metalworkers from the Grand Duchy of Baden who had first settled in Pennsylvania in 1829 — arrived in Rutherford County, NC in 1830.

Tompkins, a Rensselaer Polytechnic-trained civil engineer from Edgefield County, South Carolina, arrived in Charlotte in March 1883 as a sales agent for the Westinghouse Machine Company, marking the start of his career as Charlotte's leading cotton-mill-campaign promoter.
