On the trail
Trails are billed as challenging hikes — 20 miles at the Sparrow Springs access, 6 at the Boulders access. The visitor center with exhibits is open daily 9–5, and Sparrow Springs has picnic shelters.

The take

Thirty-five to forty minutes west of Uptown gets you real elevation: two summit trails that climb hard and pay off harder. Entry is free and the gates open daily except Christmas, though hours shift with the season — start early and bring water.

Is there a fee?

No — day use is free. Fees apply only to camping, group climbing, permits and facility reservations.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?

Yes, on an attended leash no longer than six feet, including at campsites — but not inside buildings.

How much trail is there?

Spread across three access points: about 20 miles at Sparrow Springs, 4 at Linwood and 6 at Boulders. The Ridgeline Trail connects through to Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina.

Can I paddle or fish here?

Only at the Sparrow Springs access.

Is the park ever closed?

Only on Christmas Day — it is open every other holiday.
