The take

NC highway historical marker L-5 (cast 1936) reads: 'Stood a few feet southwest. Operated 1837-61, 1867-1913. Razed, 1933, and rebuilt as art museum three miles east.' Companion marker L-87 on Randolph Road records that the building 'Operated as Branch U.S. Mint, 1837-61. Relocated to present site as art museum, 1936,' and was expanded in 1968 and 1985. The DNCR Gold Mines (L-99) essay adds that European investment in the Rudisill and St. Catherine mines helped secure Charlotte's 1835 authorization of the branch mint.
